The Comic Spot
"Those Darn Comic Shops"
by Chris Lambert
Yes, it is that time of year when one year has passed away and the new one is about to start. So in that spirit I want to look back at those buildings that make a difference in my life.
You walk into the comic shop nowadays and you still have a chance to see a room that harkens back to the 50s, 60s or 70s. Yes, antiquity is not only all around you, but in many cases it needs to be as these rooms contain the holy grail of phrases…back issues.
You look in one direction and you might find old toys, in another, you might see funny but weird looking tee-shirts and yet in another, posters from your favorite recent comics.
But don't forget to look under the glass counter where you will find lots of very old games, comics and what-nots as you enjoy your childhood from years ago or maybe your father's childhood.
And don't forget those great old (in some cases) magazine stands and in other cases, the spinner racks from those old days of getting your comics from the local drugstore. These are the sights that light up my memory circuits and allow me to go "all nostalgic." In fact I will go as far as saying that any modern day comic shop that does NOT have an old spinner rack or magazine stand is not worth its weight in Amazing Fantasy #15's.
Luckily, I have one of each of those items in my house!
So head down to your nearest shop and build a relationship with the staff there since these are the places that you build great friendships and at the least places to get friendly conversations from like-minded people on like-minded topics.
I myself have actually gone down to, "the shop" as I like to call it and killed a Sunday afternoon just for the fun of it. And I feel if you follow my lead in my search for fun and familiarity…you will too.
My Favorite Panel
by Chris Lambert
Today, since the Comic Spot subject is not comics per se, but rather the place where you purchase them and hang out at, my panel is nothing more than a photo of myself (with the long hair) and my old dear friend Bruce, who stopped by to see me while I was helping out with the store's ordering.
And if you look at what is behind us, you will see to our right, a magazine rack. Yes, that magazine rack (the one that says…this week's books) is in my house right now. And that fits perfectly into my theme and my house and my favorite panel!
